When researching wireless power technology systems for your business, you may run into strongly worded opinions or insights that make you pause. We see them all the time. Here are the top three myths circulating right now about wireless power.
1. MYTH: Wireless power is an energy hog.
If you’re talking about real wireless power, that is, power delivered over air at a distance, without the need for charging mats or pads, energy drain should not be an issue. Yet some critics continue to believe that all types of wireless power drains power continuously drain power, due to their “always on” status. We can’t speak for all technologies, but with Ossia’s patented RF-based wireless power system, Cota®, this is simply not true.
Cota delivers power to the devices that need it most. If there are no devices that need power, the transformer will go into “standby” mode to conserve energy. What’s more, the Cota system can be managed via the cloud, so you can control which devices receive power priority and when, which helps you manage energy usage.
Consider how the transformer connected to the three-prong outlet is warm when you unplug it, even when it’s not in use. Plugged in devices may be more of an energy drain than your wireless power system.
2. MYTH: Wireless power will “fry your insides.”
You may have heard the myth that wireless power may increase your risk of suffering health effects triggered by energy exposure. When it comes to RF-based wireless power systems like Cota, no research supports this idea at all.
In fact, because the Cota receiver sends a beacon signal that bounces off objects but not organic matter, and the Cota transmitter delivers wireless power along the same paths, the transfer of energy is inherently safe. It naturally avoids people and pets. What’s more, Cota has proven tested safety results and maintains FCC safety requirements.
RF-based wireless power like Cota is delivered over air much like Wi-Fi, and aligns with similar safety standards.
This myth may have become popular due to other types of wireless power delivery.
3. MYTH: Wireless power takes forever to charge devices.
Wireless power delivered over air loses energy the farther it travels: this is a fact. The myth occurs when you theoretically apply a new technology to an old problem; that is, a fully drained device. With wireless power, devices will always be charged, so charging speed becomes a non-issue.
Think of wireless power as a trickle charge that follows your device around your office, vehicle, and home, even while it’s in use and in motion. Because you likely will spend so much time with your device in a wireless power-enabled space, your device will never need to “charge.”
